What Is Indian GI Certification

Geographical Indication is the Intellectual Property Rights such as Patents, Trademarks, Design

A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on agriculture, Non-agriculture or manufactured product that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin territory.

It was implemented worldwide in 1994, as the World Trade Organisation Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights ( Trips) Agreement. In India, in December 1999, the parliament summarized the Geographical Indication Act 1999. The Geographical Indication Office for the implementation of this Act is situated in Chennai.

The products gain a reputation due to the defined geographical territory & location of their origin. Thus, the Gi-tag guarantees assurance of quality to the consumers in domestic and international markets.

The purpose of Indian GI tags is to support the Indian rural & local origin product and to mainstream and empower the tribal, rural & local traders.

Any other region, territory, or country cannot claim the GI tag of one area region, or territory. Due to that, the place of origin becomes the intellectual property of that Product.

A GI Certification is awarded on the bases of the following features:

  • Soil

  • Water

  • Geographical Climate situation

  • The history & culture makes the products unique.

  • Qualities like a pleasant fragrance and vibrant color.

  • Taste and aroma.

  • Traditional and unique production methods.

Basmati rice, Kashmiri Saffron, Darjeeling tea, Alphonso mango, and black rice are a few of the Agriculture products that have earned a gi tag.

India is a diverse country. One can't point out just one thing or good and say that's Indian culture. Indian culture is vivid. It is made up of new and the old, the past and the present, the modern and traditional.
